The most notorious TV series recently released in Russia, «Gangs of Kazan» has won the top national online content award
The most notorious TV series recently released in Russia, «Gangs of Kazan» has won the top national online content award. The project caused great controversy worldwide by portraying teenagers’ lives in an industrial town in Tatarstan. The realities of the late ’80s and early ’90s, previously unknown to the world, were depicted with such extreme clarity and realism that the series went viral within weeks of its online premiere. NTV, being the most innovative among broadcasters, decided to release the project on its terrestrial channel. It was a great success, especially when the project won the National Online Content Award for its daring and merciless realism.

The drama «Gangs of Kazan» directed by Zhora Kryzhovnikov, tells the story of a pivotal period in the country’s history in the late 1980s. It was the time when Perestroika moved from the Kremlin to the streets. While parents struggled for survival, children drifted together to form ruthless gangs and «fight for the asphalt.» The main character, Andrey, is a 14-year-old boy from an educated family, who studies music and lives with his mother and 5-year-old sister. Andrey regularly faces pressure from teenage gangs. To protect himself, he befriends the «boys.» One of them, 14-year-old Marat, becomes Andrey’s and the audience’s guide into the complex world of street violence and survival. This project is incredibly powerful because no one has managed to portray that dark decade so truthfully and mercilessly before. This is why it became so popular and created such an enormous buzz worldwide. What seemed like a local issue-teenage street gangs of the ’80s in the former USSR-caused great controversy and generated interest from all over the world.

However, this project is only one of many in the successful online content lineup for NTV. Earlier in May, the historical investigative mini-series «Cerberus»-about a serial killer in 1825 Saint Petersburg-was shortlisted as one of the best online projects, alongside the best podcast nomination for «Food for Life» with Sergey Malozyomov. The latter is a fantastically popular investigative program, aired for eight seasons, that was turned into a fabulous podcast by its creator.
